Path of tradition to chestnut groves
Hours of travel: 2
Difference in height: 150 meters
Difficulty: Path T (Hiking - tourist route)
Round trip: 4 km
The chestnut grove of Capranica Prenestina (800-900 meters above sea level), can be reached by crossing one of the ancient Capranicensi paths called "il ciuccio", is one of the peculiarities of this territory and without a doubt the environment brings the population closer to its tradition and its land: the chestnut. The path, with a maximum difference in height of 360 meters, starts from the town square to go down through paths, carrarecce and stretches of asphalt road, up to the chestnut grove. A ring between the ancient trees that can be traveled in about 3 hours will take you back to the asphalt road for a suggestive and nostalgic experience among stone houses and huge trunks. In recent years, in order to recover the state of neglect caused by infestations and lack of culture, the chestnut grove has been the subject of several projects promoted by the Municipality and the Prenestini Naturalistic Civic Museum, designed to safeguard the existence of plants, the use of roads of distance and the centuries-old tradition of "Mosciarella" (chestnut dried over low heat in the typical houses-driers scattered in the woods).
